Sexual Health

Across the UK there has been an increase in the number of people with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and Sefton is no exception.

These include diseases we think of as something from the past, such as syphilis and gonorrhoea.

Chlamydia is the most common STI but because it does not cause any noticeable symptoms most people do not even know they are infected.

Chlamydia can be treated by a simple dose of antibiotics.  But if untreated it can lead to infertility or even ectopic pregnancy, which could be life threatening.

Using condoms helps prevent the spread of STIs and unwanted pregnancy. They are available free from contraceptive services, GU clinics and some youth projects, where the c-card sign is displayed.

Your local clinic can also advise on family planning options and help you choose the right contraception for you.
